West Yorkshire Young Labour is supporting the Hope not Hate campaign to persuade the Home Secretary to stop the planned demonstration by the English Defence League in Bradford at the end of August.
The EDL argue they are a grass roots social movement, however, their recent actions would suggest they are a divisive group stirring up hatred amongst communities. Given that Bradford is one of the most multicultural cities in the UK, you have to ask why the EDL are coming to Bradford in the first place if not to try and promote racial hatred and animosity between communities.
We believe the march could provoke violence in the city and damage community relations. The long term effects on the city could be devastating, creating distrust among individuals and communities in a city which still vividly remembers the riots of ten years ago.
The English Defence League (EDL) is an extreme right-wing organisation which holds anti-Muslim marches and demonstrations across the United Kingdom. It seeks to provoke unrest in our towns and cities with inflammatory chants about Muslims. Many journalists who have covered EDL marches have reportedly suffered EDL intimidation. Some journalists have even claimed to have received death threats.
West Yorkshire Young Labour is strongly opposed to the aims and actions of the EDL. The EDL seek to pit different communities against each other and stir up violence. As members of the Labour Party, we value the multiculturalism and diversity of our country. We believe that people of all races, cultures and faiths have the right to live together in a society based on respect, tolerance and understanding.
