Labour Leadership Hustings for Young People, Sunday 12th September, 7pm, Marriott Hotel, Boar Lane, Leeds, LS1 6ET

Young Labour, West Yorkshire Young Labour & Scottish Young Labour are giving you the chance to speak directly to the Labour leadership candidates. On Sunday 12th September at 7pm in Leeds City Centre, at the Marriott Hotel, you will have the chance to grill the candidates about the issues that affect young people today. It’s been a very busy campaign, one which is beginning to draw to a close. Ballot papers have been sent out and this will mostly likely be your last chance to speak to the candidates.

No matter who wins the contest, Young people will play a very important part in rebuilding our party. It is important that the eventual winner knows how big an asset young people are to the party. However, it is equally important that we as young people have the chance to voice our opinions about the direction Labour now takes.

The event is FREE to attend and is open to labour party members and members of the public. Leeds is very accessible from all parts of the country and it would be fantastic to have as many young people there as possible. If you would like to attend then sign up at http://labourhustings.eventbrite.com

If you have any questions then simply email tarry.samuel@gmail.com for more info.

We hope to see you in Leeds!

    Best Wishes,

Young Labour & West Yorkshire Young Labour & Scottish Young Labour

West Yorkshire Young Labour is supporting the Hope not Hate campaign to persuade the Home Secretary to stop the planned demonstration by the English Defence League in Bradford at the end of August.

The EDL argue they are a grass roots social movement, however, their recent actions would suggest they are a divisive group stirring up hatred amongst communities.  Given that Bradford is one of the most multicultural cities in the UK, you have to ask why the EDL are coming to Bradford in the first place if not to try and promote racial hatred and animosity between communities.

We believe the march could provoke violence in the city and damage community relations. The long term effects on the city could be devastating, creating distrust among individuals and communities in a city which still vividly remembers the riots of ten years ago.

The English Defence League (EDL) is an extreme right-wing organisation which holds anti-Muslim marches and demonstrations across the United Kingdom.  It seeks to provoke unrest in our towns and cities with inflammatory chants about Muslims.  Many journalists who have covered EDL marches have reportedly suffered EDL intimidation.  Some journalists have even claimed to have received death threats.

West Yorkshire Young Labour is strongly opposed to the aims and actions of the EDL. The EDL seek to pit different communities against  each other and stir up violence. As members of the Labour Party, we value the multiculturalism and diversity of our country.  We believe that people of all races, cultures and faiths have the right to live together in a society based on respect, tolerance and understanding.

Please support this Hope Not Hate campaign and lets work together stop the EDL march in Bradford. Follow the link below to sign the petition.

    Hi guys,

The Labour Party has had 25,000 new members joining since the general election.  Many young people in particular are outraged by Tory-Liberal plans to sacrifice public services on the altar of the reducing the deficit.

People from all walks of life are joining the Labour Party to fight for the progressive policies that we believe in.  As we are in the process of choosing a new leader, this is an ideal opportunity for young members to get involved and come along to a leadership debate.  You’ll be able to meet other young members and directly question the leadership candidates.  Also, if you join the party now, you will be able to vote for the next leader of our party.

If you’d like to take part in any of the exciting leadership events coming up, contact us at westyorkshireyounglabour@googlemail.com or e-mail me directly at ymamedy@gmail.com

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Yil

With apologies for the short notice if you’ve not seen this already – I had hoped that everyone would have received a letter through the post by now but these have been delayed unfortunately.

Rather short notice, I wasn’t aware until an hour ago this was on. It’s Thursday evening, 6pm in the Student Union building at Leeds. all the information should be on this facebook link. It’s an open event, anyone can attend. The radio station broadcasting it doesn’t appear to have any further details, but you could just log on and listen.

An explanation of how PMQ are ordered and debated. Yes, I’m a nerd. But if you want to learn how Parliament actually works, read the Twitter Tzar.

Young Labour out campaigning in Barnsley ahead of the crucial by-election.

Young Labour out campaigning in Barnsley ahead of the crucial by-election.

Members of both West Yorkshire Young Labour and York Young Labour went out campaigning in Barnsley today ahead of a crucial by-election in  St. Helen’s ward on Thursday October 15th.  The election will be a close race between Labour and the BNP and could result in Labour losing overall control of the council.

If you are interested in popping down to Barnsley to lend a hand, or helping with some phone-banking at Regional Office in Wakefield, please get in touch with us at westyorkshireyounglabour@gmail.com.  It is vital that we get every Labour vote out to stop the BNP from spreading their divisive message and trying to destroy our communities in the process.

What do you do for a living? I’m currently working as a supply teacher, teaching mainly History and French.

Any hobbies (other than politics!)? Travelling is my big one.  I spend half my life inside airports.  I also like watching sports, particularly football and cricket and learning and speaking different languages.  Does food count as a hobby as well?

Favourite book:  The Day of the Jackal

Favourite film: No easy answer to this one.  So, for now, I’ll just go ahead and say Jackie Brown.

Favourite quote: ‘I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.’ Voltaire.

    Favourite place: The United States.

Favourite music: I like lots of different types of music.  I’m really into Motown and classics from the 60s, 70s and 80s, but I also like more modern stuff.
