As part of Young Labour’s national campaign ‘Young, Hidden and Homeless’, local Young Labour groups are aiming to pass motions...

As part of Young Labour’s national campaign ‘Young, Hidden and Homeless’, local Young Labour groups are aiming to pass motions through local councils that:

Reaffirm its responsibility to ensure people in homeless situations are provided with safe and secure routes out of their plight

Acknowledge the increase in homelessness

Identify ways of collecting more accurate data on the actual number homeless

Work with relevant charities to ensure that anybody in need gets directed to sources of help

With the help of local councillors and Michelle Collins (Y&H Rep – Young Labour National Committee), a motion was heard in Wakefield council, mandating the council to ensure that anyone who may need help, is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, is directed to where support and advice may be available.

The motion presented to council reads below;

This Council :

Notes that during 2011/12 in Wakefield there was a :

· 49% increase in homeless applications compared to the previous year
· 33% increase in homeless acceptances
· 26% increase in placements in temporary accommodation

Further notes that rough sleeper estimates have also increased by approximately 70% over the past two years.

Recognises the work of the Council’s vulnerable adults service, for people who are homeless or in housing need.

Also recognises that the Council has a number of schemes in place to help local residents who are struggling with their mortgage payments, including Breathing Space, the Mortgage Rescue Scheme and the Preventing Repossession Fund and is also working to bring empty properties across the District back into use.

Further recognises the work of local charitable and voluntary sector services who work with and support homeless people and rough sleepers across the District.

Is extremely concerned that the changes to welfare benefits currently being implemented by the Conservative-led Government could result in further increases in homelessness.

This Council resolves:

To increase awareness of the services available to people who are homeless or in housing need, those who are at risk of becoming homeless and rough sleepers.

To ensure that anyone who may need help, is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless is directed to where support and advice may be available.

To continue to work in partnership with Charitable and Voluntary Sector Services for homeless people and rough sleepers in the Wakefield District

I’m please to announce this motion was passed at Wakefield council meeting on 17th April 2013.

We sincerely thank Cllr Michelle Collins and Cllr Paula Sherriff for presenting the motion to council and for all councillors who spoke in support.

I’m very sorry to announce that Ryan Jackson has made the decision to step down as Chair of West Yorkshire Young Labour.

It will be sad to no longer work with Ryan with West Yorkshire Young Labour and speaking on behalf of the committee, we certainly thank Ryan for everything he has done since taking the reins in October last year.

Luge Hoggarth, Vice Chair, will be standing in as acting chair whilst we call an AGM to fill the position formally. The AGM will be earlier than planned, details to follow.

I’m sure Ryan will continue to shine as a political activist and school governor and wish him all the very best with his studies. Ryan will still be an active member of the group and we look forward to working with him in the run up to the 2015 elections and beyond.

All the best Ryan,

From your friends at WY Young Labour.
